National Internship Awareness Month!
Kaptivate intern Sara shares her internship experience at Kaptivate to celebrate National Internship Awareness Month!
Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of continuing my internship at Kaptivate, where I’ve been part of a team dedicated to transforming the way organizations communicate and innovate. This experience has been more than just an internship, it’s been a hands-on learning journey that’s shaped my perspective on workforce development.
Currently, I’m working on a research-based project to identify Connecting Talent to Opportunity Challenge mentions across digital platforms. Through this project, I’ve learned how to analyze and synthesize large pools of data to uncover meaningful insights, skills that are becoming increasingly vital in our fast-moving job market. The process has strengthened my critical thinking, data literacy, and ability to translate complex information into actionable insights.
I also recently completed my Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) course, where I built a personal portfolio to showcase my projects and professional growth throughout high school. With the encouragement of the Kaptivate team, I can see my accomplishments not as isolated experiences, but as stepping stones toward a larger professional narrative, one that emphasizes curiosity and reflection. Now I’m definitely looking forward to those college LinkedIn seminars!
One of the most exciting opportunities was Kaptivate’s Scaling Early-Career Pathways Innovation Lab. I contributed behind the scenes and helped shape conversations around workforce development, a topic that’s close to my heart. At several conferences I’ve attended recently, I’ve noticed that I am often one of the only young people in the room. That contrast has reminded me how important it is to bring youth perspectives into professional spaces and how empowering it feels to be part of an organization that values that input.
Throughout my time with Kaptivate, I’ve learned that internships aren’t just about checking off tasks or learning technical skills; they’re about learning by doing. The Kaptivate team has built an environment that encourages interns to grow as thinkers, collaborators, and leaders. Each project has reinforced what it means to contribute meaningfully and stay curious.
Here are two key lessons from my experience so far:
- Professional development is an ongoing journey. Building my portfolio and completing the V-TOP course taught me how to reflect on my growth and present my work with intention.
- Youth perspectives matter. Being one of the few young voices in rooms focused on the future of work has shown me that early-career professionals aren’t just observers, we’re contributors shaping systems of change.
As I move forward, from high school into college, I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with mentors who deeply invest in my learning and confidence. This experience has not only prepared me for the next stage of my academic journey but also strengthened my belief in the power of experiential learning and inclusive innovation.
I’m beyond grateful to be part of a team that truly invests in its interns and encourages meaningful, hands-on learning every step of the way.
